These simple tips offer some suggestions for how your business can become more environmentally friendly. Based around the ethos of 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle', there are many small steps that you can take to making your business a 'green' business.

Reduce

  • Encourage staff to only print when necessary. You can put signs up in the office to raise awareness.
  • Try printing onto the 'clean' side of used paper for internal paperwork
  • Track energy use and keep your heater on the lowest comfortable setting
  • Turn off computer monitors when not in use, even if you need to keep the computers themselves turned on for remote access
  • Work to ensure that your company is reducing its use of paper and other resources by training staff and creating an Environmental Policy

Reuse

  • Unused stationery? Old hardware? Second hand office chairs? Check if anyone else could make use of it before you throw items in the bin.
  • Excel's Charity Swap Shop donates unwanted stationery and furniture to charities in need - contact us today if you have items to donate, or if you are a charity in need of certain items.
  • Why not encourage your staff to take a trip to the Wycombe Environment Centre? The Environment Centre is a registered charity based in the Chilterns Shopping Centre, High Wycombe. The Centre runs regular exhibitions on topics such as Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Biodiversity, and Sustainable Transport.

Recycle

  • Check where your business's waste is going – is it properly sorted?
  • If you have confidential waste collected, check that the paper is recycled once it is shredded. Excel offer a confidential shredding and recycling scheme
  • Excel also offer a toner recycling scheme

What's in it for me?

Committing to making sure your business is doing everything it can to reduce its impact on the environment will take time and effort, but ultimately it will benefit your business tenfold. Here's how:

  • Save money by using less energy. Keeping heating turned down low and keeping windows closed in the winter can help your business save money on utility bills. Re-using paper when printing documents for internal use helps to save money on paper and printer ink.
  • Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) – you can embed CSR into the every-day running of your business through reducing your impact on the environment. It is increasingly important for businesses to differentiate themselves from their competitors through showing a real involvement with the local community. This can involve supporting charities, as well as helping the environment.

Interested? Other ways your business can demonstrate its commitment to the Environment.

  • Have an Environmental Policy in place and train all staff
  • Ethical Partnerships – Cultivate working relationships with other ethical businesses who are similarly committed to reducing their impact on the environment. Ask your suppliers for their environmental credentials such as their Environmental Policy, and find out if your suppliers are ISO 14001 Certified.
  • Some businesses may want to become ISO 14001 certified – demonstrate your business’s ultimate commitment to reducing its impact on the environment by becoming an ISO 14001 registered company. ISO 14001 sets out criteria to follow which help your management team measure your business’s impact on the environment through an Environmental Management System.
